Re-invention has become somewhat of a trademark for upcoming Auckland artist Lucy Gray, and with their upcoming project they feel like they’ve found their sound. Gray’s latest single Like A Star is almost undefinable. It’s fresh and bright like early 2000’s dance-pop, but it doesn’t feel nostalgic; it feels brand-new.

2025 was a big year for Gray. They captured audiences around the world and have now grown their social media presence to over 100K, gained 500K streams, played at Rhythm and Vines, supported Esha Tewari in Auckland, Keli Holiday in Christchurch and Them & I on his debut Australia tour. They also performed at Ones to Watch, launched a Vinyl collaboration and headlined The Tuning Fork.

Since releasing their first song in 2022, Gray’s sound has continued to shift from indie to pop-rock and now into indie-electronic and hyperpop. Their music is inspired by the likes of Oklou, Tiffany Day, underscores and brakence.

Gray notes this song is the first they’ve produced part of, which is the immersive digicore inspired breakdown bridge, featuring their signature reflective lyricism over Mario Kart and Sonic sound bites and layers upon layers of drum breaks.

Pop that borders on electronic music has been on the rise, and long gone is the idea of electronic music being a male dominated field. Gray reflects, “Pop and electronic music, even DJ culture, just below the surface has always been pioneered by queer people, mostly by trans women, but it’s surfacing now. I’m really excited about that fact.”

Like A Star will be accompanied by a music video by Connor Pritchard and supported by NZ on Air. The next single from Lucy Gray’s project is projected to be released in mid April.
