Just Janie Releases New Single ‘Shot of Espresso’
With her EP Muse and Musician surpassing a million streams, and recognition as a 2024 Ōtautahi OMAP artist (Saltbox Studios & RDU 98.5FM), Just Janie is emerging as a compelling new voice in Aotearoa folk and Americana. The Spinoff (NZ) observed: “If you find yourself on a hike this weekend… daydreaming about Laurel Canyon, it might be the perfect time for Just Janie’s Muse and Musician.”
Shot of Espresso is an introspective lo-fi confessional track. Recorded in a cozy lounge studio in Ōtautahi, Shot of Espresso blends Joni-esque vocals and lilting mandolin and haunting choral harmonies, existing between Joni’s Blue and Lizzy McAlpines Ceilings.
Inspired by Andrew Garfield’s quote of his then girlfriend Emma Stone, that ‘She was like a shot of espresso. She’s like being bathed in sunlight’. We all crave to be someone’s Shot of Espresso.
“I wrote this track to explore being unable to find that kind of love within a relationship and the ugliness born out of heartbreak. I think it’s a universal experience. Sometimes we bring out the worst in each other, rather than sunlight. We are not always the best versions of ourselves” says Janie.
